Ramon’s Insight
My family live on a ten-acre lifestyle block – basically some grazing, mostly trees of all varieties.
Birdlife is abundant: wood pigeons, tui, kingfishers, hawks, and swallows. Sometimes in the morning, one can count twenty tui or more, and huge amounts of birds live all around us.
Fantails live under our porches feeding off spiders. It’s an amazing visual symphony of sound and beauty.
We have five cats whom prowl our terrain. The majority of kills are rats, mice and rabbits, also stoats, and occasionally a bird.
With the rat infestation, they are more focused on rodents, and we praise their kills of rodents and strongly chastise bird kills – this works, and over twenty-five years, we have proved this fact.
I am deeply troubled by the so-called experts on pest control – and have my own common sense experience to back up my conclusions.
This war on cats is not going to improve nature’s balance.
I will state, every cat we have is fixed and correctly fed and cared for – and are essential to our property’s balance. So I do agree with population controls, not vicious extermination of cats. Possums, stoats and rats, yes.
Be careful when killing our beautiful feline friends – they are very evolved beings. So let’s keep karma good for us all.
